The assassination of Chris Hani thirty years ago and the High Court’s recent decision to grant parole to his murderer, Janusz Waluś, again raise an important question in our history: What would have been the political impact on South Africa if Hani was still alive today?

Janet Smit is a former newspaper editor and the author of Patrice Motsepe. She was also a co-author of The
Coming Revolution: Julius Malema and the Fight for Economic Freedom and The Black Consciousness Reader.

Award-winning journalist Beauregard Tromp is the Africa editor of the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. He has also worked for the Mail & Guardian and The Star newspaper.

The other panelists are:

  • Ayesha Ismail, veteran print & broadcast journalist, producer, director, trainer, and consultant.
  • Justice Malala, one of South Africa’s foremost political commentators, columnists, TV presenters and the bestselling author of We Have Now Begun Our Descent: How to Stop South Africa Losing its Way and The Plot to Save South: The Week Mandela Averted Civil War and Forged a New Nation; Let Them Eat Cake: How I Ate My Way Through Mbeki, Polokwane, Zuma and Beyond and Before the rains came.
