My word! Workshops for creating a writing culture in the classroom
“The Jakes Gerwel Foundation, in the commissioning of the narrative therapist Thérèse Hulme, over the years invested in the development of Grassy Park Secondary School’s learners’ creativity. Jakes Gerwel was once a teacher at this school. With this project, named Yoh!, we could observe with great joy how young people found their voices through different forms of poetry. In 2022, Thérèse Hulme publishes the book My word! Ideas for the creating of a writing culture in the classroom, which is based on her narrative sessions at schools over the years. Some of the Yoh! poets from Grassy Park have poems that are also included in this book as illustration of how creativity should be developed in the classroom. In 2023, the Foundation invests in the stimulation of writing and reading in the classroom by supporting language teachers in the Cape Town Metropole through practical workshops.” www.jgf.org.za
