What goes into the life of the mind? Historian Sandra Swart, novelist Lebo Mazibuko, and writer and film-maker Deidré Jantjies will be talking about how they sit down to write, and the spheres of life that their writing draws on. The discussion will be facilitated by creative practitioner and writing mentor Angela Briggs.

Sandra Swart
Professor Sandra Swart is departmental chair of History at Stellenbosch University and her book, The Lion’s Historian: Africa’s Animal Past, was published by Jacana in 2024. She is currently doing a Master’s in Creative Writing at UCT.


Lebo Mazibuko
Lebo Mazibuko published her debut novel, Bantu Knots, with Kwela Books in 2021 and will be visiting Oude Leeskamer on a writing residency in November.


Deidré Jantjies
Deidré Jantjies is a cultural activist passionate about the historical stories of women. She is the founder of Na Aap Productions and the author of the illustrated children’s book Stories in die Wind (2022), which is written in Nama and Afrikaans. An animated web series accompanies the book. Her book has also made it onto the shortlist for SALA Children’s Literature Award this year.


Both Lebo and Deidré were participants in the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Bosberg Book Writing progamme in 2020.

Angela Briggs
Angela Briggs is an artist, writing mentor at the Jakes Gerwel Foundation Bosberg Book Writing residency, and an occasional writer. She has an interest in history and the environment and a wide-ranging reading habit.
