A place where stories unfold

Sindisa Mazisa: Deeply immersed in a rewarding internship at Tshedza Pictures

I find myself deeply immersed in a rewarding internship at Tshedza Pictures, where I’m gaining first-hand insights into the intricate workings of a writer’s room. Over the next three months, I’ll be stationed at this highly successful production company, participating in meetings, and actively contributing to the creative process of shows set to air on Showmax in the coming months.

Being an intern in this dynamic environment is an exhilarating experience, collaborating with seasoned professionals and witnessing the behind-the-scenes magic of crafting compelling narratives. This mentorship goes beyond mere observation; I have the opportunity to contribute creatively, allowing me to refine my skills and shape the direction of projects destined for a broad audience.

Reflecting on this incredible opportunity, I feel incredibly fortunate and happy to be where I am. A year ago, the idea of being in a writer’s room felt like a distant dream. Now, the Jakes Gerwel Foundation not only provides financial support through a stipend for my mentorship but also connects me with seasoned writers who have successfully commissioned shows for M-Net and Multichoice.

The stories I developed during my Jakes Gerwel Foundation mentorship also hold a promising future. Beyond their development in the internship, the plan is to create compelling pitch decks. These decks will be pivotal in presenting the stories to funding organisations, with the ultimate goal of bringing them to life. The aim is to captivate a broader audience through engaging narratives on platforms supported by relevant funding.

As we approach 2024, my counsel for prospective mentees is simple: Stay committed to refining your craft. Sustain your hunger through a mix of dedication, ongoing skill development, and a genuine passion for storytelling. Seize every chance to learn, evolve, and showcase your creativity – never underestimating where it may lead you.

Sindisa was a participant in the first Jakes Gerwel Foundation /M-Net Channels mentorship for budding television scriptwriters in 2023. In another first for the foundation, this is the first group of mentees to be offered internships by a mentorship programme partner.

Standing (L-R) are Ross Jantjies, Sindisa and Niel Coetzee. Seated (L-R) are Gita Fourie, mentor Tina Kruger and Palesa Shongwe.
