Paulet House writers appear in new anthology, The Seven Wonders by Mirari Press

Paulet House writers, Nadia Cassim (Bosberg Book Writing Residency 2023) and Tiaan Booyens (Kommadagga Writers’ Workshop 2024), recently appeared in a new publication from local independent, speculative fiction publisher Mirari Press.

The Seven Wonders is an anthology of short stories about witches, “from rural South Africa to eerie academies, from hedge witches whispering secrets to forces that defy understanding, these seven tales explore the trials of power, the cost of magic, and the unbreakable bonds that tether witches to their craft. In a world that has long feared and vilified witches, this collection reclaims them as heroines – figures of resistance, wisdom, and transformation. Whether through fire, foresight, or forbidden rites, each story unveils a different Wonder – some dark, some wondrous, all unforgettable.”

Cassim wrote the story titled: The Shaman and the Witch, drawing on the Western archetype of witches, as well as more immediate influences and folklore. The story follows Jo, a descendant of witches, rediscovering her true nature after an experience with Mama Dlala, a shaman just outside of Johannesburg. The short story is filled with local flavour, compelling and organic dialogue and leaves you wanting more.

Booyens worked on the anthology as editor and facilitated the book launch panel discussion at Exclusive Books V&A Waterfront with two of the featured authors, Ciaran R. Maidwell and Felix Lamont.

Our two Paulet House writers had the opportunity to meet online and work together on the publication, and eventually had the chance to meet this year at the Open Book Festival in Cape Town. Congratulations to you both, Nadia and Tiaan!
