Congratulations Vlaams -ZA 2023 residents

Ons kondig met groot opwinding die skrywers aan wat gekies is vir die Jakes Gerwel Stigting en Passa Porta se residensie-program later in Februarie vanjaar: Danie Marais, Paul Kammies en Lisa-Anne Julien! Hierdie skrywers sal Paulet Huis deel met ons Vlaamse gaste, Neske Besk en Tom Naegels.

The objective of this residency, presented in partnership with Passa Porta and the support of the Delegation of Flanders in Southern Africa, is to bring writers from different continents together in a creative environment. We furthermore want to grant these writers the opportunity to work uninterruptedly on their respective manuscripts. May Paulet House be an inspiration to all of you!

The writers’ in residence:

Neske Beks (1972) is ’n skrywer en kunstenaar wat met vaardigheid verskeie kunsvorme kombineer. Haar debuutfilm Eigen Volk (2011) weef elemente van teater, gesproke woordkuns, sang, fiksie en niefiksie saam in ʼn geslaagde en treffende geheel. In 2014 debuteer sy met die roman De Kleenex Kronieken, ʼn humoristiese kroniek van die gebeure binne ʼn familie en ook binne ʼn dorp. Sedertdien het sy tekste in verskeie bundels, onder meer Zwart (2018), gepubliseer. By die uitgewer Querido het haar kinderboek Sala en Monk – Ons Samen in 2020 verskyn, asook die bundel essays genaamd Echo in 2021. Sy dien op verskeie literêre, film- en teaterpanele en het reeds internasionaal pryse verower vir haar teater- en filmwerk. Sy is ook stigter en direkteur van Alphabet Street, ʼn gilde vir swart skrywers, asook van Tank, ʼn redaksie- en dinktenk van kleur. In 2022 word sy ingehuldig as lewenslange lid van die Nederlandse Akademie van Kuns. Sy werk tans aan verskeie projekte waar sy haar kunstenaarskap met heling kombineer.
Tydens haar residensie in Paulet Huis sal sy werk aan haar nuutste roman en ʼn multidissiplinêre projek oor kulturele toe-eiening.

Tom Naegels (1975) is a writer and journalist whose journalistic contributions, columns and opinion pieces regularly appear in De Standaard. Between 2011 and 2016 he was also the news ombudsman. He was first noticed on the literary scene in 1997 when his short story collection Het heelal in! Vijf stukjes van de kosmos appeared. In 2005 he published his first novel Los, which is both a love story and a portrait of the city of Antwerp’s social woes. The novel has been awarded the Seghers Literature Prize and was on the longlist for the Libris Literature Prize in 2006. Jan Verheyen adapted the book into a film in 2008. Six years’ research has resulted in his publication in 2021 of Nieuw België, een migratiegeschiedenis about the Belgian migration policies after the Second World War. For this he was awarded the very first ‘Most important book of the year’ prize for non-fiction in Belgium.
During his residency in Paulet House he will be working on his next historical book.

Paul Kammies is from Cape Town Southern Suburbs. He is a student at the University of Stellenbosch and a poet. Award-winning author and poet Ronelda S Kamfer said of his work: “Paul’s poetry collection, is truly exciting and experimental. He is pushing the boundaries of traditional Kaaps Afrikaans poetry, and his work is marked by a unique voice and style.” Paul will be working on his poetry collection, while at Paulet House.

Lisa-Anne Julien works in the NGO sector and describes herself as a “committed writer with a particular interest in the empowerment of women at all levels of society and a penchant to revealing the depths and inner lives of people.” Her debut novel If you save me (Kwela) was long-listed for the 2022 Sunday Times Fiction Award and the joint-winner of the University of Johannesburg’s 2022 Debut Prize for Fiction. Lisa-Anne will be working on her second novel at Paulet House.

Danie Marais is ‘n digter, vryskutjoernalis, omroeper en koördineerder van die Toyota US Woordfees se publisiteit en filmfees. Sy debuutdigbundel, In die buitenste ruimte (Tafelberg, 2006), ontvang die Ingrid Jonker-, Eugène Marais- en UJ-debuutprys. Aan sy tweede digbundel, Al is die maan ’n misverstand, (Tafelberg, 2009) is die 2010 South African Literary Award (SALA) vir Afrikaanse poësie toegeken. ’n Derde digbundel, Solank verlange die sweep swaai, is in 2014 deur Tafelberg uitgegee. Sy rubriek- en essay-bundel, Pruimtwak & skaduboksers,het in 2015 by Tafelberg verskyn.Dié bundel het in 2016 die kortlys van twee vir die SALA Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award gehaal. In 2012 ontvang hy die Media24 Legends-toekenning vir Leefstyljoernalis van die Jaar en in 2017 wen hy die kykNET Rapport-prys vir Boekresensent van die Jaar in die fiksie-kategorie. Marais werk tans aan die manuskrip van ’n vierde digbundel.

Theo obtained his master’s degree in creative writing at Stellenbosch University. He has been involved with various projects in the arts before in his role as, among others, project manager of the Woordfees, advertising coordinator at NB Publishers, programme manager at the KKNK as well as at the Vrystaat Literature Festival and as executive director of the Breytenbach Centre in Wellington.

Theo is the author of two novels, Skool and Strafjaart.
