The Jakes Gerwel Foundation, PEN Afrikaans and PEN South Africa are inviting applications for the annual PEN it down, an uninterrupted time to write residency in KwaNojoli (Somerset East) in the Eastern Cape.
The three-week residency takes place from 6 to 26 May 2024 at the historic Paulet House, the JGF’s charming home-away-from-home for writers in the lovely oasis town in the Karoo Midlands.

Your application should include the following:
- Motivation letter
- Clear overview of writing project
- Examples of current and previous work
- Note: A letter from a publisher interested in publishing your work will count strongly in your favour.
Requirements and important dates:
- Open to both emerging and established writers
- Application deadline: 16 February 2024
- Announcement of successful candidates: 5 April 2024
- When applying candidates must confirm availability for the residency period: 6 to 26 May 2024.
The residency includes:
- National return tickets to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), if needed
- Transport between the airport and KwaNojoli (Somerset East)
- A comfortable “room with a view” of your own
- Housekeeping services
- Delicious meals prepared by the Foundation’s resident chef
- Unlimited access to the internet
- Writing space in your room, in quiet spots inside the house and in the garden
- Opportunity to write without the interruption of loadshedding.
