Upcoming gospel musician Keleabetswe Langa from Vosloorus, Johannesburg sees moving Paulet House in Somerset East next month, as a time “to experience silence and serenity so tangible that I can hear lyrics and songs that are out of this world” –
Keleabetswe who goes by the name stage name Kele M, also envisions the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Songwriting Mentorship as a meeting with “beautiful souls who are creators like myself and want to make the world a better place through their music” – an experience that will be a “sweet memory in my music career.”
“I liked the idea of being mentored by mentors such as Frazer Barry and Zolani Mahola. I think there is incredible value in working with professionals, as an upcoming musician. I liked how the mentorship is treated with such exclusivity to allow us to fully experience the programme in another beautiful part of the country
Of her music, she says: “I enjoy contemporary gospel, soul, and jazz. I find that those genres best allow me to express my heart and vocal range. I have a YouTube channel where I upload gospel covers of Contemporary Christian music. I have also performed at church and university.
“I hope to create music that will be a soul-uplifting experience for my audience. To create music that will have a distinct sound and message that will stay with my audience for generations to come.”
And hopefully “create life-long relationships in the music industry,” she adds.
Keleabetswe Langa (Kele M ) is one of five 2022 Jakes Gerwel Foundation songwriters who will be in mentorship with acclaimed musicians and theatre makers Frazer Barry of Tribal Echo and Zolani Mahola of Freshly Ground-fame. The sounds they create at Paulet House will be showcased at Suidoosterfees 2023.
