A place where stories unfold

Pit bulls in Somerset East

Nash has found a dog. He is spindly and shaking. A small, frightened creature. Has he been beaten? He is not angry. On the contrary, he needs lots of love.

Nash dresses him in a child’s knitted jumper. A white baby. I pick him up in my arms and I am startled. A pit bull. These are the dogs of pimps, thugs or puny men who have grown too small. You can see his ribs. He snuggles up to you, he cannot be mad at all: all creatures come down to earth well, including our little pit bull. In the evenings, when Nash does not come, we miss the little dog man.

I walk through Somerset, to the golf course and back, past the old people’s home. A woman wants to open the door for me. Too soon I call out. I still have time. One street further on I see a full-grown pit bull behind high fences, he growls at me, we do not become friends. A small dog slips through the fence behind which the pit bull growls. Ah. He belongs there, he has gone for a ride. Poor big pit bull: trapped among humans, what is to become of you?

Somerset East has a City Hall that cries out for theatre, a mosque where women are allowed to be, empty factories because of the city and the capitalists … Somerset has two museums, after all, who doesn’t, lots of stories, poor people, beggars, fat houses and the house with the writers, the house of the professor, better of Nelson Mandela’s friends.

Somerset calls for theatre and film, for meaning and for work, for confidence and for people who will tackle it. A second revolution? Redistribution in the world? You could start at the end of the world if … well, if the humans want to be a helper, roll up from the young, from the south, then all the pit bulls would be like Nash’s dog.
