Sibuyiselo Sbuja Dywili, participant in the Brussels-to-Karoo Residency in 2024, is delighted to invite you to support his new play, The Salt Lesson, which is set to introduce him as an English playwright. Dywili worked on this play during his stay at Paulet House and also had the opportunity to present it at the ninth Teksmark last year.

The Salt Lesson takes the audience along on the journey of a young black man with a white father who’s suffering from dementia and has ultimately forgotten his own son. It explores the politics of race in an interracial family, belief, fatherhood, and family conflicts through the lens of a dementia patient and a forgotten son. What does it mean to be forgotten?
The Salt Lesson, produced by Sibuyiselo Dywili and directed by Anthea Thompson, will run at the Baxter Theatre’s Golden Arrow Studio from the 17th to the 21st of March 2025. Forming part of 15 curated shows set to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Baxter Theatre’s Zabalaza Festival, the play features a formidable cast comprising Adrian Galley, Thapelo Tharaga, Megan Choritz and Likho Mango. A haunting music composition from award-winning sound designer Jannous Nkululeko Aukema and an arresting set and lighting design by Solomon Mashiane will have audiences enthralled. The production is creatively stage managed by Bulelwa Mbalo.
