A place where stories unfold

Book launch and lunch hour seminar: ‘The equality of shadows’ by Charl-Pierre Naudé

Book launch

Charl-Pierre Naudé is a South African poet, novelist, published philosopher and participant in this year’s Brussels to Karoo residency, where he worked on his novel The equality of shadows.

The equality of shadows is a compelling novel – in some places uproariously funny, in others filled with deep pathos – about the vagaries of identity, love and time. It is both a translation and fully-fledged ‘reimagining’ of his Afrikaans novel Die ongelooflike onskuld van Dirkie Verwey and functions as both meditation and sharp commentary on the creative process, identity and why stories are so important to who and what we are.

We are excited about the launch of his novel on the 18th of September 2024 at Oude Leeskamer (Jannie’s Reading Room) in Stellenbosch from 11:00 to 12:30.

If you’d like to attend his book launch, please send an email to Carin at events@oudeleeskamer.org to reserve a seat.

Lunch hour seminar

If you are interested in Charl-Pierre Naudé’s book launch, you might also be interested in the lunch hour seminar on ‘The dual roles of precision and re-imagination in literary translation’.

The talk will compare instances of the English translation The equality of shadows with the Afrikaans source text, Die ongelooflike onskuld van Dirkie Verwey. The highlighted instances will problematise a straightforward conception of what faithful translation entails. Translation is not always a matter of words, but of “cultural logic”, which might require reimagined inventions.
