September was a winning month for Deidre Jantjies, author of Stories in die wind.
As producer of the film Carissa, owner of Na Aap Productions, Deidre and her partners, scriptwriters Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar and co-producer Annemarie du Plessis were victorious at the 11th edition of Final Cut in Venice
Durban FilmMart SA reports that Cape Town film Carissa, a project by the DFM SA Jumpstart alumni won these awards:
- Biennale Jury Prize – a cash award of € 5.000
- Prize “Coup de cœur de la Cinémathèque Afrique”, consisting of the acquisition of the non-commercial and non-exclusive broadcasting rights for 7 years with a value of € 4.000 – 6.000 depending on the genre, length and available territories of the film;
- Festival International de Films de Fribourg is offering its participation in the production costs of a DCP (€ 2.500).
Carissa is set in a quiet village and is “about a young woman who is pushed by her grandmother to apply for a job opportunity on a new golf estate being developed in the mountains. However, when she learns that the estate will be built over her estranged grandfather’s rooibos tea lands, she is confronted with a difficult choice: take the job or take over the land.”

Back in Cape Town, Deidre received two more awards, this time from the Western Cape Government’s Cultural Affairs Awards 2023. These awards were in the categories:
- Most Innovative Young Artist
- A Project that promotes South African Sign Language or the Marginalised Indigenous Languages of the Western Cape.
