A place where stories unfold

Invitation to donate Christmas gifts to children in the Eastern Cape

The Jakes Gerwel Foundation invites donors to sponsor a Christmas gift valued at R50 per learner. Each gift will include a storybook, sweets and a small toy. This initiative supports the Foundation’s Blue Crane Reading Project in the Eastern Cape, where we reach out to 3 000 learners in the Foundation Phase in the Blue Crane District, including Pearston, KwaNojoli (Somerset East) and Cookhouse. We employ 40 reading assistants who provide intensive one-on-one reading sessions to children with severe reading disabilities. All participating schools have offered the Foundation a dedicated classroom, which our assistants use as reading rooms equipped with books, shelves, reading mats, and creative word games. These rooms create a safe space for children who are often ashamed of their reading struggles.

Given that these learners come from isolated areas with limited access to the arts, the Foundation also brings children’s plays to the schools and hosts holiday programmes featuring word games, food parcels, face painting and more. Through these activities, we aim to foster a sense of community and demonstrate that reading and books can be fun.

We kindly ask for your support in providing Christmas gifts. With just R50, you can bring joy and happiness to a young soul who has very little. We need R150 000 to ensure that each of the 3 000 learners receives a gift.
