Zubayr Charles, participant in the Kommadagga workshop in 2020 and in Artscape’s 2024 New Voices programme this year and writer of the play this bra’s a psycho, wrote an article about his experience with mental health, featured on The Cape Creative Collective.
In his article “I’m Not Okay”, Zubayr talks about his past and present struggles with his mental health. He elaborates on how tired, alone and hopeless one can feel. However, he ends his article with encouragement to seek professional help if you too struggle with your mental health and to share your story so others will know they are not alone.
For me to write and share my journey is the first step to healing. And if any part of you resonates with what I’ve written, please know that you are not alone … Tomorrow I begin the new-found healing journey. Despite everything I have endured, I know that I will be okay.
