A place where stories unfold

To be part of something bigger

Creating a different set of sounds is just one of the experiences Ceres-born Kerischnie Pheiffer hopes to gain when she and four fellow songwriters move to the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Paulet House in Somerset East next month.

The 2022 Jakes Gerwel Foundation songwriters will be in mentorship with acclaimed musicians and theatre makers Frazer Barry of Tribal Echo and Zolani Mahola of Freshly Ground-fame. The sounds they create at Paulet House will be showcased at Suidoosterfees 2023.

With a deep love of Hip-Hop and R&B, Kerischnie always “dreamed of becoming a professional rapper”. She currently performs mostly at youth events and so by spreading her songwriting wings in mentorship, besides creating new sounds, she wants to test her limits and gain as much experience as possible.

Seeing the mentorship as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Kerischnie is set on making it a journey of discovery of herself and her artistry, as well as a chance to “be more, better” and to “work smarter”.

“I know I can be better than what I already am. I wanna create my best music through this programme. I want to be part of something bigger, because my thirst is growing, and this program is perfect for someone like me.

“I’ve never been part of something like this, so it was really just for the experience and possibilities. Being and working with the right people at the right time. And I want to learn more, extend my knowledge in my genre,” Kerischnie says.

Kerischnie is betrokke by die onafhanklike produksiegroep Barbarr Records and Media.
