The year-long Jakes Gerwel Foundation / NB Publishers’ Mentorship Programme for Emerging Writers of Fiction and Non-Fiction 2022 ended on 27 November where the writers tweaked here and there on their manuscripts before the sending to their publishers at NB. Mentor Suzette Myburgh said last week that her mentees Allen Grootboom and Hans Kistings’ manuscripts just needed one final check before it would land back at NB.

Mentor Angela Briggs commented: “Queen of crime Juliette Mnqeta getting into character behind bars – it’s been great to work with her this year at Paulet House through Jakes Gerwel Foundation. Like the year, her manuscript is nearly done and dusted – fingers crossed!”

And being a writer for real in the garden, Juliette writing her poignant thank you letter to Mrs Phoebe Gerwel, widow of the late Professor Jakes Gerwel, without whom there would be no foundation and Paulet House where so many writers from multiple languages, genres, backgrounds, nationalities have been come to give their stories wings.

His mentor Angela commented: “The writer at work at beautiful Paulet House in Somerset East. It’s been such a pleasure working with the talented Nixon Mateulah on his manuscript, Running Home. We’ve just come back to Cape Town after our final workshop and it’s safe to say it’s a wrap!”

The seasoned mentors Suzette and Angela. Suzette has mentored nine out of 17 mentees mentored in the programme since 2019. Angela has mentored 6. In 2019, author/editor Francois Bloemhof mentored two.

Congratulations mentors and mentees for another good year at Paulet.
